The Equal Opportunity Cell addresses the ongoing challenges affecting staff and students of Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe, Other Backward Caste, minorities, and People with Disability (PWDs). Helping and empowering these students to fully participate in the academic, intellectual, social, and cultural life of the college on an equal basis is the main goal of the Equal Opportunity Cell.
The College is committed to the principle of equality in education, welfare for the teaching/non-teaching staff and students and will continue to develop equal opportunity and equity practices and programs compatible with its overall goals and responsibilities. The College is equally committed to providing a safe environment that is free from risks to health and safety. These commitments are consistent with the principles of justice and the pursuit of excellence, and conform to the spirit and intent of equal opportunity, anti-discrimination and occupational health and safety legislation. The College aims to provide employee and students with an educational and employment environment that provides equal opportunity and is free from unlawful discrimination, discriminatory harassment, sexual harassment, bullying and victimization.
AIM
The Equal Opportunity Cell stands as a pillar of social justice in the institution. The society works towards its commitment of creating avenues for students with disability to fulfil their potential and create awareness among the members of the institution to the needs of students with disability and under-represented sections of the society.
SCOPE
The scope lies in creating an atmosphere of equality with special privileges to the least advantaged groups of the educational institution. The society also focuses on the academic discourses to sensitise the college community. Extra-curricular activities are conducted to bring knowledge and awareness among the student community.
Objectives
- The EOC oversees the effective implementation of the principle of equal opportunities to all.
- Safeguard the interest of students without any prejudice to their caste, creed, religion, language, ethnicity, gender and disability.
- To promote the equality among all and eliminate the discrimination or harassment.
- To adopt and implement harmonized guidelines and space standards for a barrier free built environment for all.
- To promote diversity and inclusive practices on campus and provide the underprivileged groups with adequate opportunities.
- To create an atmosphere of equal opportunity through awareness generation programmes.
- To expedite legal redress in matters of violation of equal opportunity.
- To disseminate the information related to schemes, programs, notifications/memoranda, office orders of the Govt., related to welfare of target groups from time to time.
Roles and Responsibilities
- The office of the EOC will coordinate all the programmes of various agencies and Governments running in the University which aim to ensure equality for different marginalized sections of the society.
- The EOC will compile all the relevant information about students and teaching staff that belong to the marginalized section of the society.
- The EOC will work as a grievance redressal office for the members belonging to SC/ST/OBC, minority and persons with disabilities.
- The Presiding Officer and other members of EOC will ensure representation of different marginalized sections as provided by the constitution and fair treatment in all spheres of the University.
- The EOC will be responsible for the faithful observance of the policies and guidelines of the Central Government, State Governments and University Grants Commission (U.G.C.) regarding the welfare of the marginalized section of the society.
- The EOC, through various means will sensitize the people regarding special need of the differently able, SC, ST, OBC and minorities.
- The EOC will hold awareness programmes regarding the special needs of different sections at the beginning of the academic session in the University and various hall of residences.
- The EOC will seek support and co-ordinate with different Individuals/organizations engaged in the welfare of marginalized sections of the society.
- The EOC will be a nodal office for the utilization of grants received from the various sources for the welfare of the marginalized section of the society in the University.
- To organize periodic meetings to monitor the progress of different schemes.
Functions
- To ensure equity and equal opportunity to the community at large in the college and bring out social inclusion.
- To enhance the diversity among the students, teaching and non-teaching staffs population and at the same time eliminate the perception of discrimination.
- To create a socially congenial atmosphere for academic interaction and for the growth of healthy inters personal relationship among the students coming from various social backgrounds.
- To make efforts to sensitize the academic community regarding the problems associated with social exclusion as well as aspiration of the marginalized community.
- To help individual or a group of students belonging to the advantaged section of society to contain the problem related to discrimination.
- To look into the grievances of the weaker section of society and suggest amicable solution to their problems.
- To disseminate the information related to scheme and programs for the welfare of the socially weaker section as well as notification/memoranda, office orders of the government, or other related agencies/organization issued from time to time.
To sensitize the college on the problems of SC/ST and other disadvantaged groups.
